TER Master Works Edition Digital Surround Recording Dolby Surround CD1: 53' 53" CD2: 57' 36" ℗ 1997 Jay Productions Ltd. © 1997 Jay Productions Ltd. Licensee in the EEC: MCI Ltd. Issued under license from JAY Productions Ltd. Original sound recording made and owned by JAY Productions Ltd. Made in England. Manufactured & Marketed by MCI Presents. Music published by Carlin Music Ltd. Digital Editing at Finesplice Studios. "Cabaret" opened on Broadway on November 20 1966 at the Broadhurst Theater. Opened in London on February 28 1968 at the Palace Theatre. Broadway revival opened on October 22 1987 at the Imperial Theatre. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London on June 29, 30, July 1, November 2, December 2, 3, 1993. Special thanks to Bridget Aschenberg, Jane Augustus, Michael Berk, Rex Bunnett, Anne Collis, Fred Ebb, Tim Flavin, John Kander, Barbara Lambert, Larry Moore, Jim Wilhelm and the late Richard Grenville. 'Money '87' was the fusion of the original Money Song ('Sitting Pretty') and 'Money, Money', which replaced it in the film, and 'Don't Go Sally' replaced 'Why Should I Wake Up?' in the 1987 Broadway revival staring Joey Grey. 'I Don't Care' was cut in 1966 but re-instated in the 1987 revival and sung by the emcee prior to Sally's 'Cabaret'. The film score included four songs not in the original Broadway production, 'Mein Herr', 'Money Money', 'Tiller Girls' and 'Maybe This Time', the latter originally being featured on Liza Minnelli's debut record album in 1964. (taken from liner notes by Rexton S Bunnett) Notes not on release: The first recording of "Cabaret" (based upon John Van Druten's play "I Am a Camera" and stories by Christopher Isherwood) was the Original Broadway Cast album originally released in 1966, with some of the songs heavily edited and several cut to save space, and others (especially "Telephone Song") taken at a faster tempo. Columbia/Legacy's 1998 CD reissue of the Original Broadway Cast recording of "Cabaret" contains eight previously unreleased demo records -- several of which are "intros" to a full-fledged song -- plus extensive liner notes featuring the original playbill, rare photos, and an essay by Ken Mandelbaum. The 1968 "Original London Cast album" (CBS) featuring Judi Dench as Sally Bowles, Kevin Colson, Lila Kedrova, Richard Owens, Peter Sallis, Pamela Strong and Barry Dennen as Emcee was released in the UK and reissued on the CBS Embassy label in 1973. The 1972 movie soundtrack (MCA Records) with Liza Minnelli is perhaps the best-known of the recordings, although the movie "Cabaret" is much re-written and eliminates all but six of the original songs from the stage production. Both the "Original London Cast Album (1986 London Revival)" (First Night Records) featuring Kelly Hunter as Sally Bowles, Vivienne Martin as Fräulein Schneider and Wayne Sleep as Emcee and "The New Broadway Cast Recording (1998 Broadway Revival)" (RCA Victor) featuring Alan Cumming as Emcee and Natasha Richardson as Sally Bowles have been released. This 2-disc "1997 Studio Cast Recording (First Complete Recording)" is the only recording containing all the songs from the Original Broadway Score, The Film Score and The Revival Score including many incidentals and instrumentals not usually recorded. (see bonus track information listed above.) A completely remastered 2006 release of the 1997 Studio Cast Recording is now available on Jay Records CDJAY2 1311 (USA). The 2007 "London Lyric Theatre Original Cast Recording" (BK Records) (UK) features Anna Maxwell Martin, Sheila Hancock and James Dreyfus as Emcee. In addition to the above recordings, cast albums for the French, Spanish, Greek, Israeli, Italian, Austrian, Dutch, and German productions have been released.
